The Nuns picked up their first away win, and second of the season, with a 45-27 six try defeat of Dudley Kingswinford. Tries were scored through a Travis Bennett-Allcock hat trick and one each for Harry Beverley, Ben Kirby and Ben Dawes. Joe Wilson had a strong afternoon with the boot contributing 6 conversions and a penalty. Tom Smitham and Arron Skyrme started in the only changes to the side from the week before.
Not for the first time this season the Nuns got off to a flying start with Bennett-Allcock crossing within the first minute to give a 0-7.
This was extended in the 10th and then 13th minute with Kirby and then Bennett-Allcock scoring and Wilson adding two more conversions to push the lead to 0-21.
DK came back though and showed why they had been playing at level 4 last season, when they crossed for their first points on 16 minutes with a converted try of their own, 7-21.
And on 26 minutes they closed the gap further with another converted try, 14-21.
In the 29th minute their full back was yellow carded but this didn’t halt them as they managed to get their third try of the game with the last passage of play. It went unconverted but the score was now 19-21 to the Nuns.
The second half started as the first half ended with a DK unconverted try leaving the hosts in the lead for the first time 24-21 after 42 minutes.
But the Nuns came back and re-took the lead that they wouldn’t give up. Dawes picked up a try and secured the bonus point. Wilson’s conversion moved the score to 24-28 after 46 minutes with DK also picking up another yellow card.
The host’s last points of the game came in the 48th minute with a penalty to leave the score at 27-28.
The Nuns started to dominate the rest of the game and then Beverley scored in the 54th minute, Wilson added a penalty in the 60th and then Bennett-Allcock in the 66th minute to take the lead to 27-45.
Not even a late yellow card for Skyrme would allow the host to score further points as the Nuns defence held firm.
This performance rounded off the first block of league fixtures with a rest weekend coming up. Two wins and four try bonus points has been a solid start to the season against some teams who were well placed last season.
The Saxons also got their maiden league victory in Counties 3 West with a 43-19 win over Old Salts 2s which sees them with a return of a win, loss and draw from their first three games.
Next up, the 1st team host to Bridgnorth and the Saxons travel to Pinley in league action on October 12th.
