Another Club Stalwart has passed away

GEOFF HEXTALL

It is with great sadness that, again, we have to report the passing of another Club stalwart – Geoff Hextall. Our thoughts are with Geoff’s family at the sad time. His daughter has provided us with the following information and photographs.

Geoff passed away quickly and peacefully on 19 February following a stroke the day before. He was 84 years old.

Geoff played for The Nuns between 1963 and 1970, he was a scrum half. He was also one of the founder members of “The Graveyard Committee”.

The ‘Graveyard’ was formed on an idea from a small group of members from the Club who watched matches from the opposite side of the field from the main stand at the old Harry Cleaver Ground. The ‘Graveyard’ was founded on the 4th February 1977 at a meeting which was attended by: K Adams, T Atkiss, M Campbell, D Crawford, R Harris, G Hextall, J Reading, and D Swarbrigg. The aim of the Club was to promote and further the interest of NRFC.

Ray Harris was elected Secretary and Geoff Hextall Treasurer. Weekly payments of 50p were collected.

Geoff also used to run the bar on a Sunday night to allow the McKinley’s (Bar Managers) a night off. He also helped Rod Gale to build Squash Courts and lounge bar extension at Harry Cleaver ground.
